HipChat for holidays

‘Tis the season for family time, good food, and holiday spirit. It’s a time to reconnect with those who are most important in your life. And, shocking as it is, it’s a time to put aside the rigors of work and tune into the sentimental things in life. Yes, that even means putting down your cell phone and laptop from time to time.

But if you’re anything like us, your cell and laptop are nearby at all times. That doesn’t mean, however, that you have to be bombarded with work while in your happy place. Whether it’s the holiday season or just a lazy Saturday afternoon, using these HipChat tips will help bring work life balance to an equilibrium.

Setting yourself up for a peaceful holiday season only takes a few moments.

1. Set your status as away

When you used (or use? bleh.) email, you most likely set up an out-of-office email response. There are even easier ways to do this on HipChat.

First, set your status as away (red) and create an away message. Click your avatar in the top right corner, then click “away” and enter a message for your teammates to see.

Anyone who goes to message you 1-to-1 will be able to see this message and know immediately that you are gone.

2. Add out-of-office info to your name

Second, go to your account settings and add your out-of-office dates to your name. This way your teammates can see when you’re gone until right from the chat list.

3. Silence the noise with notification settings

Now that you’ve done your due diligence by informing teammates about your status, make sure that you’re not bombarded by work. First, go to your global notification settings. On the desktop or web app, click your avatar in the top right corner and click “Settings.” Click “Notifications” on the left.

Here you’ll be able to set the default settings for notifications. Choose a noise level – loud, normal, or quiet. Easily choose whether to get alerts for 1-to-1 chats and how you want the alerts to come through.

Even better, you can set these preferences per each room (available on the web and Windows apps, as well as the Mac and Linux beta apps). Want to keep tabs on just one room while on the holidays? Set that one to “loud” and all the rest to “quiet.”

With these three simple steps, you’ll be ready to spend that quality time with your loved ones. Don’t worry – your work will be waiting right there for you when you return. Your chats and work are safe with us.
