@mentions and names, take 2

By Pete Curley | 2 years ago | 12 Comments

A few days ago we changed the way that @mentions and names work in HipChat. We’ve gotten a lot of helpful feedback and we’ll be rolling out some updates today:

  • @mention names are now editable by users. The default name will still be @FirstLast. They still have to be unique.
  • Admins can lock down user profiles. Large companies can’t have users picking their own mention names. It gets out of control. Now admins can lock down user’s profiles so they are no longer able to change their full name, email, or @mention name.

We hope this solves some of the issues people have been having over the last few days. As always, we love to hear your feedback.

    Sweet!  Would be nice to see the @mention of the user in their public profiles.

    I really had hoped for the ability to trigger on multiple @mention strings. For instance, I want to receive notifications whether people say “@zach”, “@zachary”, “@zarfmouse”, “@pingdev”, or “@pingall”.

    Could you detail how and where this configuration happens? I searched the webapp for it to no avail. (An URL to the settings page offering the feature is the perfect answer.)

    Check your account profile @mention field: https://hipchat.com/account

    In the webclient default mention is @”First Last” and that doesn’t notify people who were mentioned.

    Everyone makes mistakes and it’s extremely encouraging to see Hipchat responding so quickly to user feedback. Kudos to you!

    Thank you for responding quickly to (small) customer feedback. And the lockdown option ensures the right experience for larger companies as well.
