We’ve just released a new update to the HipChat desktop client. We’ve been trying to focus on getting out some features to support larger groups and part of the effort is fixing our support for people with similar names. Fortunately we were able to get in a bunch of other cool features into the update along with our new support for mention names and display names. The full list:

  • New feature: Support for new @-mention names and display names
  • New feature: Inline loading of previous chat history (no more having to go to the web!)
  • Improvement: Shortcut keys are less likely to interfere with international characters and keyboards
  • Improvement: Link to upload photo on status chooser / personal profile
  • Improvement: Greatly improved roster load speed for large groups when sorting by status
  • Improvement: Better default selection when using @-mention autocomplete
  • Improvement: Support for 3rd party chat state / typing notifications
  • Improvement: Better s/// replacement (including links / emoticons)
  • Improvement: The join chat shortcut is now ctrl/cmd+n (new chat is now ctrl/cmd+shift+n)
  • Improvement: .gif image previews are now hidden by default (controllable by a preference)
  • Improvement: Profiles are now cached for 30 minutes instead of indefinitely. Updates to fields will show appropriately.
  • Improvement: Display a message when someone is added to a private room
  • Improvement: CTRL/CMD-9 will always go to the last tab (similar to Chrome)
  • Bug fix: Sending long strings of emoticons no longer causes poor truncation resulting in stray HTML characters
  • Bug fix: Tooltips now show correctly for idle users
  • Bug fix: Archived rooms no longer increase lobby height when hidden
  • Bug fix: Properly sort users when sorting by status

Is the @-mention name a unique username? Where does it get set in a profile? Or is just now using the users complete name?

Not digging the changes to @mentions…I keep @mentioning a short name (@ted) and they’re not being notified because I didn’t use their full username.

Unfortunately I’m also not digging the changes to @mentions, it seems like a breaking change!  Surely the new client should have supported the old naming conventions for a couple of releases, or the upgrade should have been compulsory on client app start-up?  We’ve got users across our estate on different versions of the desktop client who aren’t getting notifications now.  An unfortunate side effect is that the iPhone app is also more painful to use now, having to mention peoples full names on a mobile device is tricky to get correct.  Is there anything in the pipeline to improve either of these experiences?
