Emoticons Everywhere!

| May 21, 2012

EmoticonsEver since we launched HipChat, emoticons have been one of our favorite features. Last year, we launched a referral program which gave groups an opportunity to get their own custom emoticons in exchange for referring new teams to HipChat. Fast forward 8 months or so and we’ve noticed a couple things about the referral program:

  • Lots of groups want custom emoticons without having to find someone to refer
  • We had to handle each referral request for emoticons manually, via email, which isn’t very efficient

So, we’ve decided to rethink how we handle custom emoticons. Given how awesome they are, we figured, why not just let users upload their own emoticons? And that’s exactly what we’ve done.

Now, group admins can control the list of emoticons specific to their team by going to https://www.hipchat.com/admin/emoticons. Upload any image (within limits) and it will immediately be available to all your users connected on HipChat clients. Each group can add up to 25 emoticons for use by their members.

Try it out! We hope it makes your chat experience a little more fun.

So awesome. Seriously. (yodawg) I heard you like icons.

I love it.  Can anybody think of a clever way that we can share works of art with each other?

This is amazing. I’d love to have these supported in the web app’s history page too, they just show up as (nopechucktesta)

We’re loving our new emoticons over at Khan Academy. Our lead, Ben Kamens, created one out of my hipchat photo (bluesteel):

These are awesome!!  We just tried updating a couple of ones we just made and they don’t seem to want to overwrite our original graphics.  Is this a permissions or caching issue?

    • http://powdahound.com Garret Heaton

Caching issue, but we just deployed a fix to solve it. Try re-uploading and then signing into your client agan and you should see the new image.

25 sounded like a great number until my team got their hands on this. Now we want about 100. 🙂

  • Jimmy Jones

A list of all the emoticons would be awesome.

    Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb

Is there a price tier that supports 25+?

    • http://www.hipchat.com/ Chris Rivers

We only have one pricing “tier”, so no version with extra emoticons. If you really really need more, you can let us know, but part of the fun of having it limited is that you keep it to the ones that you really use 🙂

    plz add (slowpoke) smile

  • ZSJ

This is interesting, but we are having an issue with emoticons showing up when posted via the API.  Is this possible?

    • http://powdahound.com Garret Heaton

The change we just made makes this possible. 🙂 http://blog.hipchat.com/2012/07/10/a-simple-but-powerful-change-to-our-messaging-api/

I feel silly asking but is there a size limitation for custom icons? 25×25? 36×36?

    • http://www.hipchat.com/ Chris Rivers

The max dimensions are 30×25. It should display an error if you try to use an image larger than that 🙂

Is there a way for group members (non-admins) to see a list of the group’s emoticons?

    • Jon Moter

I’d love to know the answer to this too!

    • http://www.hipchat.com/ Chris Rivers

Unfortunately, we don’t currently have a way to view a list of your group’s emoticons for non-admins. Definitely something we should add though!

      • Dev Doctor

what’s the ETA for this, pls?

      • Matt

        Did this ever get added?

        • http://www.hipchat.com/ Chris Rivers

We are working on a way to expose these within the client as part of a larger update that’s taking most of our time. We don’t have a specific release date, but we’re seeing a good amount of progress, so look for it in within the next update or two.

    • Will

/emoticons would be cool and wouldn’t require a UI update…

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

    A must. (ermahgerd).

  • http://alper.nl Alper Cugun

Could we go to a bigger file limit? Anything under a 1MB should do the trick.

  • http://aramk.com/ Aram Kocharyan

Add a button for this on the client!!!!

  • http://www.EGAFutura.com Juan Manuel Garrido

    F*cking awesome!

  • Andrew

…i can’t download this emoticon. Can you give me Link URL Grafic for all emoticons?

  • Andy

I realize this is old, but the first result for hipchat emoticon * always leads to this blog post. I’m not an admin in my org so is there any way yet to know which emoticons I can use? Otherwise I can’t use this feature at all.

    • http://www.HipChat.com Wesley Faulkner

      Yes, just look here: https://www.hipchat.com/emoticons
Listed are the global emoticons and the custom ones for your group if you are signed in.
