Desktop client update: Oct. 18, 2011

By Chris Rivers | 4 months ago | 6 Comments |

We just released an update to our desktop client. This one is mostly a bug fix release, aimed at fixing some issues that arose with the recent update to AIR 3.0.  Release notes below:

  • Bug fix: Improve scrolling in AIR 3.0
  • Bug fix: Stop tooltips for unconfirmed message from getting stuck
  • Improvement: Updated Mac notifications to make use of Growl 1.3 GNTP support (see comment below)
  • Improvement: Added some additional international characters to @ mention detection
  • Bug fix: Fixed display of longer guest URLs
  • Bug fix: The ‘reconnect now’ link will now correctly reconnect now

We still have noticed some issues regarding scrolling when new messages are received, but overall the experience should be much better. Try it out and let us know if you find anything amiss.

Is there a trick to enabling Growl notifications.  I have Growl 1.3 and the updated HipChat client (from the Mac app store).  I’ve restarted both applications.  HipChat is visible in the Growl Applications tab, but notifications don’t go through Growl :(

Anything specific we have to do to get Growl working?

I tried restarting Growl. Nothing. I also tried enabling network connections to Growl. Nothing. I do see HipChat listed in Growl’s applications list though.

FYI: I meant I have Growl 1.3 from the Mac App Store (not HipChat from the Mac App Store).

Growl functionality is still spotty. There seems to be an open issue with Growl and Flash which isn’t in the most current build available in the App Store (http://code.google.com/p/growl/issues/detail?id=300&can=1&q=milestone%3D1.3.1&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Priority%20Milestone%20Owner%20BlockedOn%20Summary)

Sometimes it will work for me pretty consistently and other times, the app is constantly forced to fall back to non-growl popup notifications. We’re still keeping an eye on it and hopefully it will become better as Growl 1.3 is updated. Incidentally, if you want to forcefully enable or disable Growl notifications in the app, you can use the (secret) keyboard shortcut ctrl+shift+g. Right now we fall back to built-in toasters if we detect an error with Growl, so if you find that happening often, it might be easier to forcefully disable them.

I update HipChat on the 18th and Skype today.  Now my icons do not display in HipChat.
